A Cooeey guide to Chavs
What is a Chav? What does a Chav do? Where do Chavs live? The topic of Chavs has been raised a number of times on the MySay forum, especially by our users in the UK. So, as a service to those who are Chav-ignorant, or those who simply haven't gotten around to watching Little Britain, we present this: The Cooeey guide to Chavs.
So what are they? In basic terms, it's a relatively nasty, UK-centred word for people who highly value tacky gold jewellery mixed with designer sportswear. Because the term and the subculture stems from lower class stereotypes, "Chavs" are readily connected to traditional "yobs", "bogans" and "hooligans".
Where does the word come from? There are several languages that have words similar to "chav", from the Romani word for child "chavi", or "child", to the Spanish word, "chaval" which means, "lad". Since the word started being spread by British newpapers and tabloids in the year 2004, people have turned the word Chav into acronyms, including: Council Housed And Violent or Council House Associated Vermin. Furthering the terms stereotypical association with the lower class, the term, "Charva" is common slang for someone who is in a social group with high unemployment rates or "the non-working class."
The term Charva is then often applied to a wide set of criteria seen as not conforming to the societal norm. These criteria include: living in council housing, being on unemployment benefits, loitering in public places, being loud and rude in public, being racist, and probably of most interest to you here on Cooeey: Celebrating ignorance and rejecting education as well as hating emos and Goths over all subgroups.
It's no wonder we hear about people hating Chavs a lot on this site!
As you can see, it's not the most flattering term to use for someone. Nevertheless the term and its stereotypes have gained a great foothold in British culture. Continuing the British tradition, a whole host of witty terms have popped up to describe various aspects of Chav culture. For example, the tight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pulled back ponytail that many Chav girls sport is known as a "Croydon facelift" after the area Croydon in London.
So do you think you can spot a Chav? The most famous example would of course be Little Britain's Vicky Pollard, whose Kappa tracksuit and "Croyden facelift" have found plenty of fame on Australian TV. As far as music goes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], look no further that Goldie Lookin' Chain, who spawned the hit, "Guns don't kill people, rappers do", as well as female singers like Lady Sovereign and Lily Allen.
In Australia, of course we simply refer to Chavs as "bogans". But how about the rest of the world? What else could be the equivalent of "Chav".
