A few -- Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry, for instance -- have the talent to develop into strong mainstream pop and rock recording artists. Others (Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino) have carved niches in R&B and/or gospel music.
Melinda Defeats the American Idol Curse
Into this predicament steps Melinda Doolittle, with a name more apropos for a Disney character than a serious musician. Fortunately for her, she also possesses arguably the best voice of any female American Idol contestant of the past five years. That voice propels her debut album, Coming Back to You, past the more mundane releases of most other Idol alumnae, but not quite into the stratosphere of the platinum-selling Idol forbears.
Melinda Doolittle's voice is better than most of her younger (and younger-sounding) competition for listeners. However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Coming Back to You is not without its flaws. Some of the musical arrangements "Through the Fire," "We Will Find a Way,") are far too staid for a voice as dynamic as Doolittle's.

At the same time [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Doolittle sprinkles each track with a vocal style that is simultaneously current and reverent of the past. Her cover of Chaka Khan's "Through the Fire" does not try to match the vocal power of the original; after all, what voice could compare to Chaka's? Instead, Doolittle opts for a slightly more restrained interpretation of the song that highlights its beautiful melody.
The Doolittle disc is a solid (albeit not spectacular) throwback to old-school soul music [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Melinda's voice is an ideal conduit for such a delivery. Her cover of Bonnie Raitt's "The Fundamental Things" reminds the listener of the sassiness of the original while exposing a level of soulfulness that Raitt cannot access. Doolittle's bluesy renditions of "Walkin' Blues" and "Dust My Broom" elicit memories of the bygone era that produced singers such as Tina Turner.
Without the overwhelming support of the Fox network, contestants are left to fend for themselves with their raw talents in an industry where talent is hardly the most important element in the equation of album sales.
(Justin who?)
It is not uncommon for singers who succeed on American Idol find success more difficult to attain after their run on America's most popular television show ends.
The jury is still our on the more recent former contestants. And for the others? Well, many of them will never be heard from on a national stage again.
At times, the backing band' and production team created arrangements that sometimes cross the dangerous boundary separating authentic soul sounds from mediocre production value. In the end, though, Doolittle's voice will make listeners forget many of the disc's other shortcomings. Melinda's debut merits a B- and eager anticipation of her follow-up album.
