Mavis E. Smith Jersey
Mavis E. Smith Jersey, age 90,NFL Jerseys, of Oshkosh, formerly of Omro, died peacefully at her home, on Thursday, October 14, 2010. She was born April 15, 1920, in the Town of Omro, to the late John and Beulah (Stead) Veith. Mavis was a graduate of Omro High School. On April 23, 1941, she married Leo Basel in Omro, and he preceded her in death in July of 1946. On May 8, 1948, Mavis married Gerald E. Smith Jersey at St. Mary Catholic Church in Omro, and they made their home in Omro until May 14, 2008, at which time they moved to Evergreen Retirement Community in Oshkosh. Mavis was a graduate of the Oshkosh Teachers College with a teaching degree, and in 1966 she earned her B.S. degree in Education from the Oshkosh State Teachers College. Mavis' teaching career spanned 30 ½ years until she retired in 1982. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Winneconne, St. Mary's Bible Share of Omro, the Omro Retired Teachers, Omro Service League, Omro Homemakers, and was a past secretary of St. Vincent DePaul in Oshkosh.
Mavis is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gerald "Curly" E. Smith Jersey, of Oshkosh; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Sandy Basel, of Roscoe, Illinois; Dan and Paula E. Smith Jersey, of Gilmer, Texas; Jim E. Smith Jersey; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kate and Tom Griffith, of Vancouver, Washington; Carol Curler, of Eagle River; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
Along with her parents and first husband, Mavis was also preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Galetka; and one great-granddaughter, Peyton Curler.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 18, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 210 Pleasant Drive, Winneconne, with Fr. Jason Blahnik and Sr. Pam Biehl officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Oshkosh. A Visitation for family and friends will be on Sunday, October 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home, Winneconne, where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
Memorials have been established for Evergreen Retirement Community, and St. Mary Catholic Church, Winneconne.
