Yes that’s right, Gabriella Cilmi is just 16 years old. And yet her voice carries all the maturity of the vocal powerhouses with whom she is already being compared. She has a soulful retro tone that instantly reminds listeners of the big soul divas of the sixties, and it’s no surprise that she is being touted as the next Amy Winehouse.
Remarkable Potential
'Got No Place to Go’ is equally original with its playful and varied lyrical rhythms adding to an already upbeat and catchy track. ‘Save the Lies’, Cilmi’s next single release, also has an infectious quality, this time with a heavily synthed backing track, and swift pace driven forward by Cilmi’s commanding vocals. The best tracks are a little bit dirty, a little bit bluesy, and downright wonderful.
Gabriella Cilmi is living in a popstar whirlwind right now. Three years ago, a family member persuaded her to give an impromptu performance of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ when on a family day out. A quirk of fate ensured that she was seen by Warner Music exec Michael Parisi, who also happened to be visiting the same Melbourne festival. She was snapped up instantly and jetted off around the world to make her name, resulting in the enviable situation of having four major record deals to choose from.
Now, the engaging young Aussie songstress leads a charmed life. She’s beautiful, talented, embarking on a worldwide tour, has provided tracks for films, TV shows and ad campaigns, and all this before her seventeenth birthday.
The record finishes with a totally uninspiring cover of Martha and the Muffins’ ‘Echo Beach’. It’s generic production at its most dull. A shame, and a blemish on what is otherwise an impressive and authoritative debut.

And yet the negatives aren’t isn’t overly concerning. It is clear there is much to come from this remarkable young lady. A few more years and a little more experience will no doubt teach her how to best let her voice shine and how and where she can push its boundaries.
We can definitely look forward to her learning exactly those lessons which her aptly named album has, perhaps unwittingly, defined. Let’s hope she’s not stifled by the more standard and generic numbers her label seems to be encouraging her towards. All in all, definitely one to watch.
However the album is not all 'sweet about Cilmi'. All too quickly it seems that the tracks become over-reliant on the somewhat monotonous, if upbeat, sound used with such success in ‘Save the Lies’. In fact this particular style of track becomes distinctly tedious, especially when coupled with the duller licks, and relentless thumping percussion of tracks such as ‘Messy’ GHD New Purple Indulgence Hair Straighteners, which both date the album and fail to challenge GHD Hair Straigheners, stretch or even complement Cilmi’s already established and indisputable vocal ability.

But does her album do justice to her obvious and copious talent? In many ways, absolutely. The slower numbers in particular suit her soulful delivery, the now ubiquitous ‘Sweet about Me’ (from the hugely successful ‘upside down’ TV ad campign for Sure) ‘Sanctuary’ and ‘Einstein’ being some of the most imaginative and melodic. |
