Question 3 Greyhound Racing Ban Approved in MA
It was an American

, Owen Patrick Smith who introduced greyhound racing into Britain in 1926 with the first track being built at Belle Vue in Manchester. Only 1,700 attended the very first meeting and most of them out of curiosity, but within months, crowds of over 10,000 were commonplace and the sport was in the ascendant. Soon tracks were springing up all over Britain, the most prestigious being at White City in London, a stadium originally built to stage the 1908 Olympic Games. Canine superstars such as Mick the Miller also whetted the appetite of the public and greyhound racing even enjoyed boom years through the depression of the 1930s. A total of 111 tracks have been licensed since that inauspicious start, but today only 26 remain. Further track closures are predicted and trainer Michael Peterson – a major player at Oxford stadium – is on record as stating: “The sport itself is in turmoil, absolute turmoil.”
Targeted promotions including reduced admission, attracting hen and stag parties, special deals in restaurants etc., have been applied across greyhound racing over the past few years with limited success and industry working parties have attempted to get to the bottom of the decline in popularity of the sport

,. but with a astonishing lack of clarity.
The closure after Boxing Day 2009 of Coventry’s Brandon Road greyhound track is yet another nail in the coffin of the greyhound racing in the United Kingdom. Although the battle lines are still drawn for the protracted fight to reopen London’s Walthamstow Stadium, this latest news has rocked a sport that was once second only in attendance to soccer in the UK.
Diversification the Key to the Future
The ability to bet online or by mobile phone has obviously contributed to the decline in attendances

, but some track owners must also take their share of the blame as they have opted for the quick buck of redevelopment of their tracks for housing or offices rather than supporting a sport that had previously been their life-blood.
Mick the Miller Whetted the Appetite
Television coverage of horse racing in the 1960s was cited as one reason that punters began to turn their back on the sport and also afternoon dog racing, produced exclusively for bookmakers to broadcast in their shops, has made it easier for punters to bet on the sport without actually attending the tracks.
Track Owners Chasing the Quick Buck
Several tracks have bucked the trend by diversifying into other areas, such as stock car racing, speedway, casinos, nightclubs etc and indeed in 2009 four UK tracks carried out extensive refurbishment projects. Wimbledon, home of the Greyhound Derby, is also to undergo major refurbishment as the track’s owners have offered up the current main grandstand and car park for redevelopment purposes.
The fight goes on at Walthamstow with a strident protest group supported by Waltham Forest borough council and also by local MPs, battling with the developers to return greyhound racing to the track. Unlike the sport in general, this one is, at least, set to run and run.
