Temat postu: gold gucci watches Shelters on the Appalachian Tra
This section contains most of the highest points along the AT, including Clingman’s Dome

, the highest point in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains, and more peaks of over 5,000 feet that any other section. Being in the GSM park also means that this is one of the more remote sections of the AT. Wildlife is abundant here, including deer, wild boar, and black bears.
The Smoky Mountain section of the AT is commonly sub-divided into two sections, divided by US441: a 40.3-mile South section from Fontana Dam to US441, and a 31.3-mile North section from US441 to Davenport Gap. All told, there are 11 shelters along the Appalachian Trail in the Smoky Mountains. In this article, I have given a brief description of the seven shelters along the south section. Here's a description of the shelters on the north section.
Just outside of the GSMNP, at either end of the AT, are places to get good hot meals, wash clothes, and find soft, comfy beds to sleep in, and places to stock up on supplies. In fact, Fontana and Cosby are resort towns, with nice hotels and cabins

, shops, and restaurants. Many through hikers spend what they call “zero days” (zero miles hiked) to enjoy some time in Fontana Village and in Cosby.

Mollie’s Ridge Shelter (10.6 miles from Fontana Dam) – A good-sized shelter with two sleeping platforms, a very nice cooking and eating space with benches outside of the sleeping area, and plenty of flat ground surrounding the shelter for tent campers. Right next to the AT. The water source is ok. The major drawback to Mollie’s Ridge is the bathroom area: which is only a heavily wooded dead-end trail down the steep side of the mountain (bring your camp shovel and be prepared to hold onto a tree).
Spence Field Shelter (2.9 miles from Russell Field) – One of the larger and nicer shelters on the AT, about a quarter-mile walk from the AT on the NC side. There is a large covered sitting/cooking/eating area outside of the sleeping platforms

, as well as a large fire ring and seating are in the open. The water source isn’t too far, and is usually pretty strong. One of the nicer features is the raised, enclosed privy, making this one of the most comfortable backcountry places on the AT for a bathroom break.
Russell Field Shelter (2.5 miles from Mollie’s Ridge) – A small shelter, right next to the AT. No cooking/eating area attached to the shelter. There is a fire ring with logs for seats in front of the shelter. There is a very good water source, but it is kind of a long and steep walk down a trail on the Tennessee side. Again here, the bathroom area is only a dead-end trail. Russell Field is one of the few shelters to feature a chain-link fence front.
Moving south to north, the Appalachian Trail enters the Great Smoky Mountains National Park just after crossing Fontana Dam in Fontana, NC. The AT moves north through North Carolina until it meets the Tennessee border, and then follows the TN/NC border to Davenport Gap in Cosby, TN, where it exits the GSM National Park.
