The Black Knight: Emotion

The Book of the Duchess, Chaucers premier major poem, is widely agreed to have been written for Chaucers contributor John of Gaunt later the death of his wife, Blanche, Duchess of Lancaster [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in 1368. In the poem, the Dreamer encounters the Black Knight grief for his wife, White.
He believes repenting of his viewpoint toward mundane happiness would be treasonous to the God of Love (1115-1125). They keep talking, but rather than unraveling his situation, the grieving Black Knight distances himself from his sorrow at configuring his detriment in the terms of courtly metaphors, generalizing his grief in order to deflect it (Bahr 51-52).
