n you buy a piece of silver jewellery it always looks so shinny and clean to begin with. But how do you keep it this way. Most people who wear silver jewellery will notice that it often seems to tarnish or discolour over time. This article gives you a few tips on how to look after your jewellery to prevent this from happening, and also gives you some tips on what to do if your jewellery does get tarnished. Assuming you've spent your hard earned cash on your jewellery, or had it given to you by someone special, you'll probably want to keep it in as good a condition as possible. Not only will it make it nicer and more pleasurable to wear, it will also make sure it keeps it value should you ever wish to sell it.
Sterling Silver is a precious metal made of at least 92.5% silver. Pure silver is far too soft to be practically used for jewellery. The legal standard of purity is set by the assay office, who then hallmark the jewellery to confirm its purity.
Prevention
Typical causes of tarnished jewellery include; applying hair colour whilst wearing your jewellery; Showering with your jewellery on; Applying body lotions after you have put your jewellery on e.g suntan lotion, fake tan etc; Sweat from physical excursion; and never taking your jewellery off. Another big cause of decolourisation is swimming. All swimming pools use chlorine to keep the water clean and hygienic, and whilst this may be good for keeping you healthy it will certainly have a negative effect on your jewellery. Also try to avoid wearing silver when taking part in outdoor activities such as scrambling. Silver is a relatively soft metal and hard surfaces such as rocks can do quite a bit of damage to your jewellery. Taking note of the above steps and taking off your silver jewellery (rings, earrings, necklaces etc) when suggested should help you avoid most of the situations where your silver jewellery id most likely to be damaged. Exercising some common sense in this area should keep you and your silver out of harm's way.
Cures
Over time it is inevitable that your jewellery will tarnish and become slightly discoloured. There are many ways you can clean your jewellery to try and restore is to its original condition. To clean your silver jewellery use a high quality silver cloth.
